How non-technical managers should evaluate AI tools
The short answer
Non-technical managers should evaluate AI tools by job fit, not feature lists. Ask: what weekly task gets lighter, who reviews the output, how fast is the first real win, and will the team keep using it after week one. If those answers are unclear, the tool is a demo — not an adoption plan.
Stop buying demos
Most tool pitches are optimized for a five-minute wow. Your week is not a demo. Start from a painful recurring task — status updates, screening notes, meeting actions — and only then ask which tool can draft that work under a human review rule.
Five questions that beat a feature matrix
Use these before you buy or mandate anything:
- Which real task in our week does this remove or shrink?
- Who decides — AI drafts, humans approve — and is that written down?
- Can a non-technical person get a first win in under an hour?
- What happens when the tool is wrong — can we catch it?
- Will we still use this after seven days of normal calendar pressure?
Fear and overwhelm are product risks
If the team is scared or flooded with options, no tool will stick. That is why people-first AI coaching and corporate training start with blockers, not vendors. The method is diagnose → de-block → simplify → apply → continue.
When to get help
If you are choosing for yourself, a free Clarity Call (via the AI agent on this site) can tell you whether you need a single coaching session (AED 1,250), a 30-Day Sprint (AED 4,000), or a self-serve next step. If you are choosing for a team, send a corporate inquiry for a proposal-based workshop or adoption sprint.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I need an IT evaluation first?
- Security and data rules matter — involve IT when company data is involved. Separately, you still need a job-fit test. Tools that pass IT but fail the five questions above still die in week two.
- Should we standardize on one tool?
- Start with one workflow and one primary tool for that workflow. Breadth feels productive and produces zero habit.
- What if my team already has Copilot or ChatGPT licenses?
- Licenses are not adoption. Evaluate whether people have a named weekly use case and a review boundary — then train on that, not on the catalog.
